Scope and Contents
This collection contains one book cover produced by the American Forestry Association's Southern Forestry Education Project, which promoted fire prevention and forest education among school children. The book cover includes illustrations of trees and a schoolhouse as well as slogans such as "Growing Trees Need Your Help" and "Stop Wood Fires!" The cover was fastened to a textbook, Essentials of Arithmetic, inscribed with "Hazel Edge, Sept. 17th, 1928."

Biographical / Historical
The American Forestry Association (AFA) (later American Forests), was founded in 1875 by Dr. John Aston Warder and other concerned citizens as an effort to protect forests from rapidly advancing development and wildfires. In 1928 the AFA created the Southern Forestry Education Project, a three-year campaign to educate Southerners about human-caused wildfires. The project sent foresters, or "Dixie Crusaders," throughout the Southern States to promote fire prevention through rallies that included a series of anti-fire education movies. The campaign also distributed forest education pamphlets and textbook covers to schools. These efforts served to launch anti-fire movements that were a precursor to the Smoky Bear era of forest fire education that began in 1944.
