Biographical / Historical
Vineville Garden Club of Macon, Georgia, was organized in 1929, the first official garden club in Macon. An auxiliary of the Bibb County Flower Club, Vineville Garden Club was formed to stimulate interest in gardening, floral and landscape designs, environmental issues, and civic beautification. The club joined The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. in 1932, and is also a member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Macon and the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Mrs. Thomas J. (Ann "Octavia" Burden) Stewart (1886-1979) served as first president along with other officers including vice president, treasurer, and secretary. The club's first community project was planting trees and flowers in Lanier Park, Macon, in 1932, in honor of poet Sidney Lanier (1842-1881). Other projects supported by the club include sponsoring a Garden Center in the Washington Memorial Library; garden therapy programs for the Central State Hospital in Milledgeville; landscaping for Habitat for Humanity projects; and improvements and installation of a park fountain finial at Washington Park. Club members' homes and gardens have been a part of various tours and the club has hosted many flower shows and have won numerous awards.
