Mule to MARTA Volume II photographs

Collection number: ahc.VIS437

Scope and Contents

This collection contains photographs of early 20th century Atlanta vehicles detailed in Volume II of Jean Martin’s Mule to MARTA book series. The collection includes images of trackless trolleys, coach cars, buses, work cars and cranes, and a light rail vehicle. Many of the photographs show these vehicles in use on downtown Atlanta streets. Other images include a revised city plan from the 1924 Beeler Report, a motorman, and a former trolley that was converted into a mobile home. Of special note are photographs of former Atlanta trolleys that were renumbered and used in regular service in South Korea from 1949 to March 19, 1968.

Biographical / Historical

Jean Martin (1919-1989) and Marge Gardner wrote Mule to MARTA Volume II as part of a two-volume series. Volume II was published in a 1976 issue of the Atlanta Historical Bulletin. In addition to Parsons Brinckerhoff-Tudor-Bechtel, Henry L. Taylor helped finance and provided visuals for the project. Taylor served as the former secretary-treasurer and vice president for the Atlanta Transit Company before becoming the deputy assistant general for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). Volume II of Martin’s book series documents the evolution of Atlanta’s local public transportation between 1902 and 1976. This period was marked by the 1902 merger of Georgia Electric Company and Atlanta Consolidated Street Railway Company into the Georgia Railway and Electric Company (later Georgia Power Company).
