Scope and Contents

This collection documents the military career of Captain James Lile Lemon. It includes the first and third volume of a three-set diary that details his military engagements and experiences. Of particular note Vol. 1 includes a rose pressed into the cover. In addition, there are copies of Lemon’s memoir in which he detailed his recollections of the war. The collection also contains transcripts of all three diaries and parts one and two of the memoir, wartime maps, newspapers, letters from James Lile Lemon to Eliza Lemon, a 1904 diary of contacts, as well as financial records from the Lemon family and the Smith Lemon Banking Company. Also included is background information about Lemon and artifacts in the collections.

Biographical / Historical

James Lile Lemon (1835-1907) was born to James Lemon (1794-1849) and Mary Brown Telford (1799-1863) in Decatur, Georgia. In 1856 he married Eliza Jane Davenport (1837-1916) near Marietta, Georgia. The Lemons moved to Acworth, Georgia, and had at least ten children: Marris (1859-?), Ann Maria (1859-1929), Emma E. (1861-1913), May C. (1864-?), Sarah Virginia (1866-1944), George (1868-?), Ava Lena (1870-1969), Edward Wayne (1872-1958), James Randolph (1876-1907), and Clayton Smith (1878-1956). James Lile Lemon worked as a merchant and farmer until April 1861, when he enlisted in the Confederate States Army, 18th Georgia Infantry Regiment, Company A “Acworth Infantry” as a second lieutenant. Major battles he fought in include the Seven Days Battle, Bull Run (Second Manassas), and Antietam (Sharpsburg). Following the Battle of Fredericksburg, Lemon was promoted to captain and led his company in the battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. During the Knoxville campaign, he was wounded and captured at Fort Sanders. He was held as a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware, Morris Island, and Fort Pulaski. After the war, Lemon returned to Acworth, where he helped the city become incorporated and worked as a merchant and farmer. In addition, he and his brother Smith Lemon (1821-1889) founded the Smith Lemon Banking Company.
