Anti-slavery and Atlanta Race Massacre newspapers
Scope and Contents
This collection contains an Italian newspaper, La Tribuna, and a French newspaper, Le Petit Journal, published on October 7, 1906, that feature front page color prints and articles about the Atlanta Race Massacre which occurred on September 22-24, 1906. There is also an article that The Independent, an African American weekly newspaper from Atlanta, Georgia, published on October 11, 1906. It details the cause of the massacre, as well as the massacre itself. In addition, there is a prayer W. E. B. Du Bois wrote, titled, "A Litany of Atlanta."
Also included in the collection is a British newspaper, The Illustrated London News from April 19, 1851. There is an article about two dioramas that a man identified as Mr. Russell painted to denounce slavery, one of which is titled "Negro Life in Freedom and in Slavery." The newspaper also features an article about William and Ellen Craft, fugitive slaves from Georgia that escaped to Boston, and then immigrated to England after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850.
