Scope and Contents
This political flyer is from the first Georgia gubernatorial primary after the state ratified a new post-Reconstruction constitution in 1877. In it, "colored men interested in the welfare of their race" urge Black Georgians to vote for Alfred Colquitt (1824-1894) over Thomas Norwood (1830-1913) because "Governor Colquitt is the first Democratic Governor that has ever given the colored people their full rights in Georgia." Colquitt, the incumbent and Democratic nominee, ultimately won the 1880 Georgia gubernatorial primary election over Norwood, who ran as an independent Democrat. Colquitt also won the general election the same year.

Biographical / Historical
Alfred Holt Colquitt (1824-1894) was born in Walton County, Georgia. He graduated from Princeton University in 1844, after which he served in the Mexican-American War, rising to the rank of major. In 1848, he married Dorothy Elizabeth Tarver (1829-1855), and they had one daughter, Ann Lane Newell (1849-1898). After Tarver’s death, he married Sarah Louisa Bunn (1832-1898), with whom he had five children: Elizabeth Hill Marshall (1860-1930), Harriet (1865-1924), Laura Warren Howard (1869-1951), Dorothy Arkwright (1871-1946), and Walter Terry(1874-1937).
In 1861 Alfred Colquitt joined the Confederate Army as captain of the 6th Georgia Infantry. During the Civil War he fought in the Peninsula Campaign, Seven Day Battles, Battle of South Mountain, Battle of Antietam, Battle of Fredericksburg, Battle of Chancellorsville, and Battle of Olustee. He rose to the rank of major general by the end of the war. Subsequently, he served in the United States House of Representatives from 1853-1855; as the 34th Governor of Georgia from 1877-1882; and in the United States Senate from 1883 until his death.
