Administrative/Biographical History

Samuel Pierce Richards (1824-1910) and his brother Jabez J. Richards opened their "Book, Music, and Fancy Store" in Macon, Georgia in October of 1848. In 1855, they opened another store in Atlanta and the store proved so successful that eventually they closed the Macon store and established a headquarters in Atlanta. After fleeing to New York City during the Civil War, the brothers returned to Atlanta and postwar business began to grow. Samuel retired from the business in 1894. He left his business to his three sons.
