Scope and Contents of the Records

The travel diary, a bound leather journal engraved “Jennie [sic] Swann, 1901,” documents Jane Swann’s summer travels through parts of the United Kingdom and Europe, June to August, 1901. Swann’s entries describe the various religious and cultural institutions she visited in cities and villages in Amsterdam, Brussels, England, France, and Scotland. Affixed and loose within the diary are commercially produced photographs and other printed material documenting her travels.

Administrative History

Jane “Janie” Swann Floyd (1882-1947), born to Mr. and Mrs. Alfred R. Swann of Dandridge, Tennessee, lived in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1903 until her death in 1947. Mrs. Floyd, wife of civic leader James S. Floyd, was a member of the Peachtree Garden Club and the First Baptist Church, and was known for her charitable contributions to underprivileged families in Highlands, North Carolina, where the Floyd family maintained a second home. Her daughter, Frances Floyd Cocke (1907-2008), a native Atlantan and arts benefactress, was married to Emory L. Cocke (1898-1980). Additional biographical information about Jane Swann Floyd has yet to be determined.
