C. Mortimer Mason papers
Scope and Content
The bulk of the personal papers of C. Mortimer Mason pertain to a cotton claim owned by the descendants of Thomas J. and Richard R. Holmes of Hinds County, Mississippi. The collection also contains geneological research materials gathered by Newel Mason to show lineage for entry into the Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the Colonial Dames. Lastly, there is a small amount of personal letters, newspaper clipping, and legal certificates and licenses.

Administrative/Biographical History
C. Mortimer Mason (1883-1970) was an Atlanta attorney born in Columbus, Georgia. His parents were Dr. Joseph Mortimer Mason and Minnie Holmes, and his siblings were Newel Mason and R. Holmes Mason. The family originated in Mississippi and settled in Macon, Georgia. Mason attended Emory College and graduated with a Bachelor of Law from the Atlanta Law School in 1912. In 1911 he was was admitted to the Georgia Bar, and three years later he was admitted into the Florida Bar. He was a Phi Delta Theta member. Mason served in the United States during World War I. Then in 1922, he married Martha Nunn (1893-1978). He practiced law on his own account in Atlanta and held licenses for Tampa, Florida, in the mid-1920s. He also worked at the District Office of Veterans' Affairs until it was moved to Philadelphia in 1954.
