Dr. Henry Jackson journal
Scope and Content
Dr. Jackson used this journal for a variety of purposes over three decades. Starting from one cover the reader finds sections of daily remarks, extensive word studies, a "Daily Journal of Gardening," laundry lists, a reading list on history, and "Facts about the Garden at Henry's Mt...". Turning the volume over and starting from the other cover reveals a "List of Flowers & Plants found at Athens & in its vicinity." The collection also contains a copy of a hand drawn sketch and notes kept as a member of William H. Crawford's diplomatic mission to France.

Administrative/Biographical History
Henry Jackson, M.D. , LL. D., taught at Franklin College (later named University of Georgia) in the first half of the 19th century. Born in England on July 7, 1778, he was the younger brother of James Jackson, an early Governor of Georgia. In 1811 he was first appointed to the faculty to teach mathematics in exchange for his room and board. He left this post to travel to France with William H. Crawford's diplomatic mission to the government of Napoleon. In 1817 he returned to the college at Athens to teach "Chemistry, mineralogy," bringing about $2,000 worth of equipment with him. He was popular with the students. At one point in his career he declined an opportunity to head the school. His son was General Henry R. Jackson of Savannah. He died in Athens on April 26, 1840.
