Administrative/Biographical History

The Apollo Social Club was a non-profit organization chartered in 1972 by six men who wanted to create a social club for gay men in Atlanta. The original charter members and first board of directors were Jim Ambrose, Charles Brame, Gene Cook, Ed Darden, David Lacks, and Don Uhlenhopp. Tony Alderson was soon added as a seventh board member. By the end of the first year, Mace H. Phillips, Jr. joined the board of directors and the club grew to 181 members. The club created by-laws and required annual dues of twenty-five dollars from each member. The membership list was private and limited to 200 people. Social functions of the club included first class shows, cocktail parties, group vacations, member banquets, holiday parties, and other social events throughout the year. The purpose of the club was to promote the social, literary, artistic, and cultural welfare of its members. The club published a monthly newsletter The Scarlett Letter.
