Scope and Content
This collection contains correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and items relating to the lives of John C. Fanning and Ella Smalley Fanning. The majority of correspondence prior to 1900 was sent to Ella Smalley and relates to her education. She received numerous correspondence from J.H. Ware, Principal of Williams Creek Academy in Norwood, Georgia.

Administrative/Biographical History
John Colley Fanning (1867-1952), son of John Colley Fanning (1821-1870) and Marcie A. Gartrell Fanning (1833-1909), was born in Wilkes county, Georgia, on January 22, 1867. He married Ella Smalley (1864- ?), who taught at the Citizens Academy in Columbia County, Georgia, in about 1901. Smalley was born in Columbus, Georgia to store owners Ferdinand Smalley (1824-1902) and Elizabeth Smalley (1842-?). John and Ella Fanning-Smalley had one child, Joseph (1904-1965) and lived in Adasburg, Georgia. John C. worked as a stock dealer, switch dealer, and stable salesman who bought and sold horses and mules.
