Scope and Contents
This collection contains photographs collected by John Patillo of Atlanta buildings and street scenes, schools, churches, residences, and portraits. Buildings and residences include Atlanta City Hall, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, First National Bank, Georgia State Captiol, the Carnegie Library, as well as residences in the Peachtree Park neighborhood. Also in the collection are images of churches such as St. Marks Methodist Episcopal Church and the Cathedral of St. Philip; and colleges and universities such as Agnes Scott College, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), Clark College (later Clark Atlanta University), and Atlanta Baptist Seminary (later Spelman College). Portraits include those of notable Atlantans, including John S. Candler (1861-1941), Julius L. Brown (1848-1910), and Atlanta Constitution staff. Of particular note are images of the Kuhns family, who operated several photography studios in Atlanta during the early to mid-19th century. All images were taken in Atlanta, Georgia, unless otherwise noted.

Biographical / Historical
John Walthall Patillo (1930-2000) was born to John (1902-1990) and Rosa Patillo (1903-1984) in Atlanta, Georgia. He received a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Librarianship from Emory University. After serving in the military during the Korean War, he became a librarian at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in 1956, then in 1967 at the Southern Technical Institute (at that time a unit of the Georgia Institute of Technology). He served as director of the library from 1972 to 1991.
