Scope and Contents note
This series includes photographs of Hughes Spalding Pavilion, the facility for African American patients and physicians at Grady Memorial Hospital that opened in 1952 and closed in 1989. The facility re-opened in 1992 as Hughes Spalding Children’s Hospital and serves Atlanta’s inner-city children. Among the photographs are images of staff in the obstetrics, pathology, and radiology departments, and patients undergoing X-ray examinations and anesthesia treatments. The series includes images of other hospital personnel in food services, housekeeping, medical records, the business office and the pharmacy. In addition, the series includes photographs of nurses engaged in various activities, most of whom are unidentified by name. Other images depict construction scenes of the facility prior to 1952.
