Avondale Estates narrative history

Scope and Content

Longtime Avondale Estates resident Dorothy Partridge wrote this narrative history of her community for a class at Georgia State University in 1992. Partridge drew heavily from contemporary newspaper articles and advertising brochures for the community of Ingleside, later Avondale Estates. The author’s compilation of survey and reminiscences of Avondale Estates residents are also included.

Azalea Garden Club scrapbook

This collection contains a scrapbook that details the social and civic activities of the club. Material includes photographs, correspondence, clippings, and programs. Of special interest are photographs of members' gardens from the Emory University area neighborhood. Barkley & King family Civil War correspondence

Scope and Content

The letters from Martin Barkley and George R. Barkley to their family members at the beginning of the war describe the hard living conditions, the health and wellbeing of the soldiers. Towards the end of the war the letters describe the demoralized attitudes of the soldiers, the regular occurrence of soldiers deserting their duties, and the significant loss of life. The letter from Edward King to his aunt, Elizabeth Barkley describes the hardships towards the end of the war.

Barrington King letter

Scope and Content

This collection consists of a letter from R. King, possibly Ralph B., to Barrington King, Sr. R. King writes about a scarlet fever outbreak on his farm in "South Hampton" and how a third of his slaves are unable to work due to illness. In the event of his death, R. King asks Barrington to advise "Fred" on farming and business. He attempts to repair his relationship with Barrington, and asks him to lend "Fred" $200 with interest for the year.

Bartram Trail collection

Battle of Atlanta Cyclorama collection
